Raspberry Cottage and Explorer's Cottage are located on an island in the middle of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Cape Breton Island was voted the #1Best Island in Canada from 2018 to 2021, as well as the 8th Best Island in the World in 2019, by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine. Conde Nast Traveler readers voted Cape Breton Island as the no. 1 island in the Americas in 2019 and in North America in 2020 and 2021. Raspberry Cottage has a water view of the sea, while Explorer's Cottage is waterfront on the Bras d'Or, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. The entire area and water on which the properties are located is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The cottages offer guests the opportunity to create their own experiences. Guests have the opportunity to pick fruits in an orchard, as well as included access to a paddle board and a canoe.  

 

Explorer's Cottage

Explorer's Cottage is a fine home located waterfront on the Bras d'Or, part of the Atlantic Ocean. This cottage sleeps up to thirteen, has four bedrooms, is about 4,500 square feet, and sits on about 150 acres of Boreal and Acadian forests.

Raspberry Cottage is a rustic cottage with fine furnishings with a water view of the Bras d'Or. It is about 1,300 square feet, sleeps eight, has four bedrooms, and sits in a clearing of about 50 acres of rolling hills of forest land fed by a spring and a stream.

Cottage Crafts for Children: Build a Cottage Scene

For local Nova Scotia children at home and the many US children who were not able to travel this year to the cottages, I wanted to create craft ideas as part of my larger “Kare Atlas” project. In this first craft, I was inspired by the view from the private beach at Explorer’s Cottage.

While weddings or any parties are not permitted at the cottages due to the delicate cottage contents and landscaping, many guests have their weddings at professional venues and then host their close family and friends at the cottages for the evenings and for wedding photos. I put together some examples of wedding photo styles that can take place at the cottages on Pinterest. The photo I took here is my own and just at the private shore of Explorer’s Cottage, which sits on the Bras d’Or, part of the Atlantic Ocean.

The cottage playlists combine Gaelic songs from Celtic Colours and Acadian music with Edvard Grieg, Icelandic music, Arcade Fire, Sun Sessions Elvis Presley, First Aid Kit, and some Johnny Cash, as he toured the area. The Explorer’s Cottage playlist is a little bit more related to exploration, while the Raspberry Cottage playlist is more related to farm and family life.
